Haydn:String Quartet No. 67 in F major, Hob. III:82, Op. 77/2

Russian Orthodox Choral Music (arranged by Péter Tornyai)

Schumann:String Quartet No. 3 in A major, op. 41/3

Dohnányi Quartet: Áron Dóczi, Dávid Pintér (violin), Péter Tornyai (viola), Orsolya Mód (cello)

The members of the Dohnányi Quartet began working together while still students at the Liszt Academy, and thanks to the richness of the string quartet repertoire and the joy of playing together, they have continued to do so with unwavering enthusiasm and curiosity ever since. The ensemble was founded under the name Rondo Quartet, but took the name Dohnányi in 2019, as they recorded all quartets of the composer. In their programs, they like to combine popular quartets with unknown works, stringing together their concert programs with connections that are not immediately apparent. This time, the connection is that the audience will hear Haydn’s and Schumann’s last completed string quartets, their most mature works in the genre. “Haydn’s, Mozart’s, Beethoven’s quartets—who does not know them, who could cast a stone at them? It is certainly the most telling testimony to the indestructible vitality of their creations that they still delight everyone’s hearts after half a century, but it is certainly not a good sign for later generations of composers that they have been unable to create anything comparable in such a long period of time.” – wrote Robert Schumann in 1842 in the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik. Before composing his string quartets, he studied the works of his predecessors in depth, and his experiences are reflected in the most concentrated form in the String Quartet in A major, composed in just two weeks. The special element of the matinee concert will be the Orthodox choral music performed between the works, evoking the important roots of Russian culture, arranged for string instruments by Péter Tornyai, a member of the Dohnányi Quartet who is also active as a composer.
