One evening – two dance productions by the Szeged Contemporary Dance Company.

Born through word of mouth, his character was first committed to parchment by a Catholic priest but was never set in stone, and so he became the archetype of the seducer that conquered western culture. This eternally youthful figure is a quintessential feature of Spanish Baroque, French Classicism, German Romanticism, English irony and the dramatic landscape of the 20th century.

Don Juan is immortal. The story of the “Seducer from Seville” set off on its journey to conquer the world some time in the 14th century. It was turned into a drama four centuries ago by Tirso de Molina and has since been adapted by dozens of notable authors from Molière to Pushkin, but it was as Don Giovanni that he became the irrepressible playboy we know today – thanks to the Mozart opera.

Carlos Saura is not strictly an ‘opera director’, but he did direct Carmen in 1983. In a flamenco style. That’s only right, Saura knows everything there is to know about flamenco. (He is also a natural when it comes to tango.)

What would Don Juan do if he lived among us today? Would he charm us once again and wrap us around his little finger, or would his magic fail him, leaving even the Stone Guest untouched.

Milos Forman’s film was a huge success in its day. Even without the eight Oscars. If artistic achievement were measured in awards alone, we’d be in trouble.
