Concert on the International Music Day
Farkas: Piccola musica de concerto
Shostakovich: Cello Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major, Op. 107
Interval
Mozart: Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K. 550

The Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra pays tribute to Ferenc Farkas, one of the most esteemed Hungarian composers of the 20th century, on the 120th anniversary of his birth. Farkas possessed a rare gift: he could shape the characteristics of various musical styles into timeless, distinctive, and beloved works—a master of “small music” with great significance. The outstanding program continues in a completely different style with Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto. The alternating robust, powerful sonorities and agitated lyrical passages, alongside the concerto’s formidable technical demands, present a thrilling challenge for world-renowned cellist István Várdai and the orchestra, now expanded with winds and percussion.

The concert concludes with a masterpiece that, from its very first bars, delivers one of the most recognizable melodies in the world—Mozart’s Symphony in G minor. The rest of the piece continues in the spirit of Viennese Classicism, offering a joyfully timeless musical experience for every listener.
