DIMENSIONS. BOUNDARIES. UNIVERSE.
‘Symphony No. 3’ is Mahler’s major large-scale orchestral composition. The piece is long but not lengthy. The magnificent dimensions of the composed music are justified by the subject to be represented, which is none other than the universe itself, interpreted here as nature perceived as spirit. Composer and conductor Pierre Boulez once wrote the following about the Austro-Bohemian composer: “Mahler’s world is not a homogeneous universe at all. He is ready to take the risk of divergent styles, uses quotation and parody as legitimate tools, and reinvents the ways we listen to music: hearing music becomes more varied, more ambiguous and richer than before.” While composing his monumental ‘Symphony No. 3’, which lasts over an hour and a half, Mahler wrote to a friend, almost in ecstasy: “there is always something trivial in my works, but this time I am going beyond all limits.”
